This project is aimed at enhancing the great work done by Greening Taupo on Wairakei Drive and extending the available range for the prolific bird life at Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary. Many business’s in the Wairakei Business Group already have well established trapping programs and this project aims to “Join the dots”.

Stage one is planned to cover the area from Reid’s Farm to the Contact Power Station using the existing cycling/walking Huka Trails for access. Hukafalls Jet has generously agreed to sponsor all the DOC 200’s required for the project and Huka Lodge  has donated $2,000.00. We will also need to recruit PFT volunteers for trap checking rosters which will be able to be done either on foot or by bike. In June 2018 we amalgamated Shawn Vennel's Quality Print traps with the traps provided by the Craters of the Moon Trust at Huka Falls carpark into the "Quality Print Trapline". John Hunter and friends are maintaining this trap line.

Eight A12's for possum control have also been purchased and deployed in August 2018.

In August 2018 a further 45 DOC 200 traps were purchased and two more traplines established. The Hukafalls Jet trapline in the area opposite the Honey Hive and the Huka Lodge trapline running north From Reids Farm. In early September 2018 the Red Bridge trapline was established with another 20 DOC 200's (white plastic cases) along the track from Huka Falls to the Red Bridge. As at October 2018 there was a total of 88 traps and over 100 kills.

Dave Kilmister, from Huka Falls River Cruise, is the champion for the area north of Aratiatia Dam on the eastern side of the river. His patch will extend from the dam to include the area planted by Greening Taupo in the winter of 2018.
