Predator Free Taupo Community Talk - 28 August 2019 at 5.30pm
This month Predator Free Taupō is hosting an evening event featuring nationally recognised native wildlife expert Cam Speedy and expert deer hunter and Kaimanawa trapper Gary Harwood. Anyone interested in finding out more about predator trapping and management is welcome to attend the event at Wairakei Golf Sanctuary on August 28th , 530pm – 730pm.
Cam Speedy will cover the principles of effective predator management – how to maximise pest control efforts to get the best conservation outcome. Gary Harwood’s presentation will outline results of the Central North Island Sika Foundation’s acclaimed Kaimanawa Whio Recovery Project.
The aim of Predator Free Taupō is to help the Taupō community to remove New Zealand’s most dangerous introduced predators. Since the group began in 2017 thousands of rats, possums, stoats and weasels have met their end in the network of humane traps placed around the district. The traps are located in a range of places, including ecologically significant areas, mountainbike and walking trails, and in a number of residential backyards – a favourite hide-out for rats.
